Day 1: (04th Sept, 2026) HANOI – PHU YEN (150 KM / APPROX. 4 HOURS) (L/D)
We leave Hanoi in the morning and slip out of the city traffic, heading onto quieter backroads that follow the Red River. The landscape begins to shift almost immediately — concrete fades into rice paddies, gentle hills, and the first silhouettes of limestone mountains rising in the distance.
Along the way, we stop for quick photos and a cup of local tea, taking in the simple charm of rural life as farmers work the fields and children wave from the roadside. As the road leads us deeper into the Northwest, the air turns fresher and the views wider.
By afternoon, we roll into Phu Yen, a peaceful mountain town surrounded by open valleys and low, rolling hills — the perfect first gateway into the region. We check in to a traditional stilt-house homestay, then take a short walk around the village to meet local families and get a feel for the slow mountain pace.
In the evening, enjoy a warm, home-cooked dinner with the host family before settling in for the night. Accommodation is simple but cozy, in an authentic Thai or Muong stilt house — a true introduction to Northwest hospitality.
Day 2: (05th Sept, 2026) PHU YEN – SON LA (170 KM / APPROX. 5 HOURS) (B/L/D)
Day 2: (05th Sept, 2026) PHU YEN – SON LA (170 KM / APPROX. 5 HOURS) (B/L/D)

After enjoying breakfast at the homestay, we say goodbye to our hosts and continue riding deeper into the highlands toward Son La. The scenery becomes increasingly dramatic as the road winds through river valleys, terraced fields, and quiet villages home to Thai, H’Mong, and Dao communities.

We stop for lunch at a small local eatery before carrying on. This entire region sits within the greater area of Pha Din Pass — one of the Four Great Mountain Passes of Northern Vietnam (Tứ Đại Đỉnh Đèo) — a route we’ll conquer tomorrow.

By mid-afternoon, we arrive in Son La City and check into our hotel. Travelers interested in history can visit Son La Prison, a former French colonial prison turned museum that offers a sobering look into Vietnam’s fight for independence.

We spend the night in a comfortable hotel in Son La, resting up for the mountain day ahead.

Day 3: (06th Sept, 2026) SON LA – DIEN BIEN PHU (160 KM / APPROX. 5 HOURS) (B/L/D)
Day 3: (06th Sept, 2026) SON LA – DIEN BIEN PHU (160 KM / APPROX. 5 HOURS) (B/L/D)
Today is our first real mountain-riding day — and one of the most beautiful. After breakfast, we ride toward Pha Din Pass, a legendary route celebrated as one of the Four Great Mountain Passes of Northern Vietnam.
The climb offers an ever-changing panorama: rolling hills turning into steep cliffs, clouds sliding across the peaks, and valleys stretching endlessly below. Small villages cling to the mountainsides, and every bend reveals a new viewpoint worth stopping for. It’s easy to see why the name “Pha Din” — meaning “Heaven and Earth” in the Thai language — suits this pass perfectly.
After descending the winding curves of Pha Din, we continue our relaxed ride toward Dien Bien Phu, arriving in the afternoon. For those interested, there’s optional time to explore a few local landmarks around town, or simply unwind at a café and enjoy the slow pace of this border valley.
We settle into our hotel for the night, resting up for the next stretch of our Northwest journey.
Day 4: (07th Sept, 2026) DIEN BIEN – LAI CHAU (120 KM / APPROX. 4 HOURS) (B/L/D)
Day 4: (07th Sept, 2026) DIEN BIEN – LAI CHAU (120 KM / APPROX. 4 HOURS) (B/L/D)
After breakfast, we leave Dien Bien and ride deeper into one of the most remote corners of Northwest Vietnam. The road toward Lai Chau winds gently through mountain ranges, river valleys, and quiet ethnic villages — the kind of landscape that invites you to slow down, take photos, and simply enjoy the moment.
This region feels untouched and peaceful, with very few tourists around. Along the way, we might see Thai, H’Mong, Dao, or Lao families working in their fields, tending animals, or walking between villages — small glimpses of everyday life in the highlands.
By afternoon, we reach Lai Chau, a calm mountain town surrounded by wide-open valleys and rugged peaks. It’s the perfect place to rest before tomorrow’s highlight: the ride over the legendary O Quy Ho Pass, one of the Four Great Mountain Passes of Northern Vietnam.
Tonight, we stay in a comfortable hotel or local guesthouse in Lai Chau.
Day 5: (08th Sept, 2026) LAI CHAU – SAPA (110 KM / APPROX. 4 HOURS) (B/L/D)
Day 5: (08th Sept, 2026) LAI CHAU – SAPA (110 KM / APPROX. 4 HOURS) (B/L/D)
Today is one of the true highlights of the journey. After breakfast, we ride from Lai Chau toward O Quy Ho Pass, the highest and most dramatic of the Four Great Mountain Passes in Northern Vietnam.
The climb is a beautiful one. The road twists higher and higher, opening up to views of steep mountainsides, deep valleys, and endless layers of clouds drifting right at eye level. Tea plantations blanket the hills, and on clear days, the panoramic views from the pass are simply breathtaking — easily some of the best riding scenery anywhere in Vietnam.
After crossing the summit, we descend toward Sapa, one of the country’s most iconic highland towns. In the afternoon, we settle into our homestay and have free time to explore: visit the Sapa Stone Church, wander through the market, or just enjoy the cool mountain air and vibrant mix of ethnic cultures.
Tonight, we stay at a cozy homestay in Sapa.
Day 6: (09th Sept, 2026) SAPA – THAC BA LAKE (230 KM / APPROX. 6 HOURS) (B/L/D)
Day 6: (09th Sept, 2026) SAPA – THAC BA LAKE (230 KM / APPROX. 6 HOURS) (B/L/D)
After breakfast, we ride down from Sapa toward Lao Cai City, following a scenic road that opens up to wide views of the valleys below. We make a short stop for coffee along the Nam Thi River — the natural border between Vietnam and China — where you can look across the water to see the Chinese town on the opposite bank.
From Lao Cai, we follow Road 70 before turning onto quieter backroads toward Luc Yen. The landscape softens here: palm forests, gentle hills, and peaceful villages tucked between the fields. By early afternoon, we reach Vu Linh Village on the shores of Thac Ba Lake, the largest man-made lake in Vietnam.
Covering more than 23,000 hectares and dotted with over 1,300 islands, Thac Ba Lake is a calm, glassy world of blue water, forested hills, and hidden caves such as Hum, Cau Cuoi, and Bach Xa.
After lunch, we take a relaxing boat ride across the lake, stopping at a small island for a swim. Along the way, you’ll see moments of daily life on the water — fishermen paddling slender boats, animals wandering along the shore, and the peaceful rhythm of Dao communities living around the lake.
Tonight, we stay in a traditional Dao stilt-house homestay right by the water, surrounded by the quiet beauty of Thac Ba.
Day 7: (10th Sept, 2026) THAC BA – HANOI (180 KM / APPROX. 5 HOURS) (B/L)
Day 7: (10th Sept, 2026) THAC BA – HANOI (180 KM / APPROX. 5 HOURS) (B/L)
After breakfast, we say goodbye to our hosts and start riding southeast on Highway 2, following quiet rural roads toward the small town of Phu Tho. The route traces the Red River for much of the morning, taking us close to the point where it meets the Black River. From here, the scenery shifts into wide, fertile delta plains — the agricultural heart of northern Vietnam.
We cross the Black River by bridge and continue through Son Tay before heading back toward Hanoi on the highway. Our aim is to reach the city before the late-afternoon traffic builds up.
By the time we roll into Hanoi, the journey has come full circle. Ahead lies the busy rhythm of the capital, but behind us are days filled with mountain passes, remote valleys, ethnic villages, scenic lakes, and quiet roads few travelers ever get to see. It’s the perfect ending to an unforgettable Northwest Vietnam ride.

Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions? We've got answers! Find common queries about our adventure programs.

Test Despite of the fact that Vietnamese government attempts to outlaw the practice, the US Dollars still acts as an alternative currency which is almost completely interchangeable with Vietnam Dong. Many prices, especially for hotels, tours and expensive restaurants, are still quoted in USD, though you can pay in dong if you’d rather - just check what exchange rate they’re using.

For everyday expenses, we recommend you carry a mix of US Dollars cash and Vietnam Dong. For larger items or when the exchange rate works in your favour, use dollars. For cyclos, local food stalls and small purchases, it’s best to use Vietnam Dong. In either case, make sure you always have a stock of small notes so that there is no need to worry about change.

The short answer is, there's never a bad time to visit Vietnam! Not all seasons are created equal though and there are pros and cons to each.
March - April is typically the best season in terms of weather to visit Vietnam. Expect sun, mild temperatures and limited rain! This also means busy season, so make sure to book in advance if you plan to visit during these months.
May - August is the hotter times of the year in Vietnam and also the rainier season. Don't be too scared of the rain though! It typically only lasts an hour or two per day, if that. This rarely disrupts travel or our tours and you get to enjoy warmer weather.
September - November are a secret gem of a time to visit Vietnam. The temperature becomes more moderate than the summer, rain stops, and the conditions are perfect for trekking or motorcycle trips. This is also when Full Moon Celebrations happen in Vietnam, so it's a particularly festive season to experience Vietnamese culture.
December - February are the coldest months in Vietnam. During these months you may prefer to visit the southern parts of Vietnam which are warmer, and we have many tours that operate there!
