Embark on a 7-day motorbike journey into the heart of Northern Vietnam, from Hanoi’s lively streets to the peaceful valleys of Mai Chau and the sweeping tea hills of Moc Chau. Cross the Da River by ferry, conquer Lung Lo and Khau Pha Pass, and ride through Mu Cang Chai’s iconic terraces and Sapa’s misty peaks. Finish with a serene boat trip on Thac Ba Lake—an adventure of raw beauty and timeless mountain culture.
Departing from Hanoi, we ride north toward the tranquil Hong Son Lake, where jade-green waters mirror limestone cliffs and jungle-covered islets. The smooth, scenic road opens into wide horizons and gentle curves—a refreshing transition from the bustle of the city to the calm of the countryside.
By mid-afternoon, we reach the peaceful Mai Chau Valley. Take time to wander through local villages or simply relax before dinner. In the evening, enjoy a traditional dance performance by the Thai ethnic community—an intimate display of their culture, rhythms, and warm hospitality. Tonight, you’ll stay in a cozy stilt house, offering a genuine glimpse into valley life and the kindness of the people who call this place home.
After breakfast at the homestay, we bid farewell to our warm-hearted hosts and ride toward the cool highlands of Moc Chau. This breezy plateau is famous for its fragrant tea hills—perfect for sampling fresh local blends or picking up a few as gifts. As we ascend, the cultural richness of the region becomes more visible, with Green H’Mong, Dzao, Thai, and Muong communities living in harmony across the rolling landscapes.
After lunch in Moc Chau, we follow the quiet and scenic Road 43, gliding through pristine, lesser-traveled terrain toward the Da River. A peaceful ferry crossing on the Van Yen Reservoir provides a gentle pause, surrounded by still waters and forest-covered hills. From here, a beautiful backroad carries us deeper into the mountains. By late afternoon, we reach Phu Yen—an inviting rural town in Son La Province. We settle into a rustic homestay, where authentic local hospitality brings the day to a warm and relaxing close.
We begin the day by taking on the storied Lung Lo Pass, a rugged 15-kilometer mountain route deeply tied to Vietnam’s wartime history. During the 1954 Battle of Dien Bien Phu, this passage served as a vital supply line for Vietnamese forces. Its strategic role made it a constant target of French air strikes, and the scars left behind have transformed Lung Lo into a powerful symbol of resilience and sacrifice.
Today, Lung Lo is recognized as a national heritage site in Yen Bai Province. Riding through it offers a compelling blend of challenge, natural beauty, and quiet reflection. Sweeping viewpoints, dramatic mountain contours, and a palpable sense of history make this one of the standout highlights of the journey.
By late afternoon, we roll into town and check in at the hotel, where a calm, comfortable evening provides the perfect reset for the days ahead.
After breakfast, we leave Nghia Lo and ride toward Mu Cang Chai, following a route that gradually climbs into some of Northern Vietnam’s most dramatic mountain landscapes. The morning begins with gentle hills draped in lush tea plantations before the road ascends toward the legendary Khau Pha Pass—one of Vietnam’s highest and most iconic mountain crossings.
This stretch is filled with postcard-worthy scenery, and we make several stops along the way to enjoy sweeping panoramas and capture unforgettable photos. The route also leads us through the peaceful Tu Le Valley, a serene rural basin known for its terraced rice fields and naturally warm mineral springs.
By late afternoon, we arrive in Mu Cang Chai, a nationally recognized heritage site celebrated for its spectacular rice terraces carved into steep mountainsides. This region is home to the Hmong people, whose vibrant traditional dress, enduring customs, and striking highland vistas create a vivid cultural tapestry. As the day winds down, we check into a welcoming homestay hosted by the Thai ethnic community—an inviting retreat that blends comfort with genuine local warmth.
Leaving Mu Cang Chai behind, we ride toward the majestic O Quy Ho Pass—a route often described as “riding through the clouds.” Mist drifts across towering peaks while vast valleys stretch beneath us, creating some of the most mesmerizing scenery in Northern Vietnam. The road winds past hillsides of tea, corn, and rice, with every bend unveiling a new, breathtaking panorama of rugged mountain wilderness. It’s a ride that is both exhilarating and humbling, offering a deep appreciation for the raw beauty of the highlands.
Arriving in Sapa—Northern Vietnam’s iconic alpine retreat—we take time to enjoy the town’s unique charm. One standout landmark is the Sapa Stone Church, a graceful French-colonial relic that continues to serve as a cultural gathering point for ethnic communities. On market days, the square around the church comes alive with vibrant traditional clothing, spirited exchanges, and colorful displays of heritage.
As evening settles over the mountains, we check into a cozy homestay, savoring the cool highland air and the rich cultural tapestry that makes Sapa such a memorable destination.
After breakfast at the hotel, we begin our descent from Sapa toward Lao Cai City. Before continuing the journey, we pause for a quiet coffee beside the Nam Thi River—the natural border between Vietnam and China. It’s a simple yet memorable moment: sitting with a warm cup in hand, watching the river flow gently between two countries.
Leaving Lao Cai, we follow Road 70 and then branch onto the quieter Road 152 toward Luc Yen. The scenery gradually shifts into dense palm forests and serene rural landscapes as we ride toward Vu Linh, a tranquil Dao village nestled along the shores of Thac Ba Lake. Spanning more than 23,000 hectares and dotted with over 1,300 islands and forested hills, Thac Ba is Vietnam’s largest man-made lake. Its emerald waters mirror ancient forests and hide fascinating caves such as Hum, Cau Cuoi, and Bach Xa.
After lunch, we board a small boat for a gentle cruise across the lake’s calm, mirror-like surface. We’ll stop at a quiet island where you can enjoy a refreshing swim. Along the way, you’ll witness scenes of lakeside life—villagers paddling in wooden boats, birds drifting through the trees, and the soothing rhythms of nature that define this hidden corner of Vietnam. It’s a beautiful opportunity to connect with the Dao community and experience their peaceful way of life by the water.
After breakfast, we begin the final stretch of our journey, riding southeast along Highway 2 toward the quiet province of Phu Tho. The road traces the Red River as it winds toward its meeting point with the Black River, offering gentle curves and sweeping river views. This peaceful ride carries us through fertile delta plains, where endless rice fields, grazing water buffalo, and vibrant village life reflect the region’s deep agricultural roots.
Crossing the Black River by bridge, we continue toward Son Tay before merging onto the main route back to Hanoi. We time our return to reach the capital before late-afternoon traffic builds, ensuring a smooth and relaxed finish to the day.
As we roll into Hanoi, we officially conclude an unforgettable journey through the diverse landscapes, cultures, and rich stories of Northern Vietnam—closing the adventure with a heart full of memories and the open road still calling.
If you want a private room, there will be a surcharge of USD30 per night.
Test Despite of the fact that Vietnamese government attempts to outlaw the practice, the US Dollars still acts as an alternative currency which is almost completely interchangeable with Vietnam Dong. Many prices, especially for hotels, tours and expensive restaurants, are still quoted in USD, though you can pay in dong if you’d rather - just check what exchange rate they’re using.
For everyday expenses, we recommend you carry a mix of US Dollars cash and Vietnam Dong. For larger items or when the exchange rate works in your favour, use dollars. For cyclos, local food stalls and small purchases, it’s best to use Vietnam Dong. In either case, make sure you always have a stock of small notes so that there is no need to worry about change.
