Your riding motorcycle adventure will begin today! After breakfast in home-stay, we say goodbye to the villagers and ride from Mai Chau to the direction of Moc Chau, where we have lunch. This highland town produces some of Vietnam’s best tea and is a good place to stock up. The surrounding area is also home to several ethnic minorities, including Green H’mong, Dzao, Thai and Muong.
After lunch, we turn to the less traveled Road 43 leading to the Da River, crossing the reservoir of Da river at Van Yen ferry, then ride on a beautiful winding secondary road until Phu Yen mountain town (a district of Son La Province in the Northwestern region of Vietnam), where we stay in a basic homestay.
Day 3: Day 3: PHU YEN – TRAM TAU (170 KM / APPROX. 6 HOURS) (B/L/D)

After breakfast at the homestay, we leave Phu Yen and ride deeper into the remote highlands of Northwestern Vietnam. Today’s route takes us along quiet mountain roads, passing through small ethnic villages where daily life remains largely unchanged. The scenery gradually shifts into dramatic valleys, terraced rice fields, and dense forests as we approach the Hoang Lien Son mountain range.
We stop along the way for photo opportunities and short breaks to enjoy the fresh mountain air. Lunch is served at a local restaurant en route before continuing on winding roads with spectacular views — a rewarding ride for those who love technical sections and off-the-beaten-path landscapes.
By late afternoon, we arrive in Tram Tau, a hidden gem known for its wild beauty, hot springs, and strong H’mong cultural presence. After checking into a local guesthouse or homestay, you’ll have time to relax and soak in the peaceful mountain atmosphere. Dinner is served locally, followed by a well-earned rest in this remote mountain town.

After breakfast, we depart Tram Tau and begin one of the most scenic riding days of the journey. The ride is relatively short in distance but rich in character, with plenty of curves and elevation changes that make it both engaging and rewarding.

As we climb higher, the landscape opens up to breathtaking views of Mu Cang Chai’s iconic terraced rice fields, considered among the most beautiful in Vietnam. We make several stops along the way to capture photos of the layered terraces cascading down the mountains - especially stunning during the green season or harvest time.

Lunch is enjoyed at a local restaurant en route before continuing toward Mu Cang Chai town. In the afternoon, we explore some of the most famous terrace viewpoints in the area and visit nearby ethnic villages to gain insight into the daily life of the H’mong people.

After an early breakfast, we depart Sơn La and begin one of the longer yet highly rewarding riding days of the journey. Today’s route takes us deeper into the rugged mountains of Northwest Vietnam, following a mix of national highways and scenic mountain roads that cut through dramatic valleys and forested passes.

As we ride north, the landscapes become increasingly wild and remote, with sweeping mountain views, deep river gorges, and occasional ethnic villages perched along the hillsides. We make several stops along the way for photos, refreshments, and to stretch our legs, taking time to fully appreciate the scale and beauty of this less-traveled region.

Lunch is enjoyed at a local restaurant en route before continuing through winding roads that offer long, flowing curves and stunning viewpoints — a dream ride for those who love open mountain roads.

Day 9: DAY 9: SAPA EXPLORATION AT LEISURE (B)
Day 9: DAY 9: SAPA EXPLORATION AT LEISURE (B)

After breakfast, your day will be at your leisure. Sapa is situated in the northwestern region of the country, close to the Chinese border. It is surrounded by mountains that are part of the Hoang Lien Son range, with Fansipan being the highest peak in Indochina. It is a place of natural beauty, with cascading rice terraces, misty valleys, and majestic peaks. It is also a cultural hub, home to several ethnic minority groups with unique customs and traditions.

Those are two options that you can consider for your relaxing day:

Option 1: Visit Fansipan Peak and Cat Cat Village:

Fansipan Mountain is the highest peak in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia, and one of the most popular destinations in Sapa, Vietnam. Known as the "Roof of Indochina," Fansipan Mountain offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys, with its peak often shrouded in mist and clouds. You can reach the summit of Indochina (3,143 meters above sea level) by cable car. There is a train that brings you directly to the cable car station at the MGallery Hotel in Sa Pa. It is the easiest way to reach the summit. After the 6km length cable car (the most extended three-line cable car system in the world), you need to walk to the summit with more than 500 steps.
After visiting Fansipan Peak, you have lunch on your own and consider visiting Cat Cat Village in the afternoon. Cat Cat Village is home to the Hmong ethnic minority group, one of the largest ethnic groups in Sapa. This village is known for its stunning natural beauty, including lush rice terraces, cascading waterfalls, and verdant hillsides. Visitors can explore the village's narrow alleys, visit traditional H'mong homes, and learn about the process of making traditional H'mong clothes and crafts.
This traditional village is a good destination if you want to take beautiful photos and learn more about the local minorities of northern Vietnam without doing a long trek. However, it is now a touristic place and sometimes crowded.

Option 2: Visit Lao Chai – Ta Van Villages

Trekking down to Muong Hoa Valley leads you to Lao Chai village, home of the Hmong people. You will be treated to breathtaking vistas of the nearby valleys and peaks along the journey. Ta Van Village is home to the Giay ethnic minority group, known for their unique culture and traditions. One of the highlights of visiting Ta Van Village is exploring the stunning rice terraces that surround the village. The terraces are a marvel of human engineering, with each field carved into the steep mountainside by hand. This valley is the most beautiful valley around Sapa town. It takes the whole day to discover the villages around the river. The distance is nearly 30 km one way. Without rain, the road is not hard to trek.

Day 10: DAY 10: SAPA - THAC BA (230 KM/ APPROX. 6 HOURS) (B/L/D)
Day 10: DAY 10: SAPA - THAC BA (230 KM/ APPROX. 6 HOURS) (B/L/D)

After having breakfast at the hotel, we’ll take our motorbikes down from Sapa to Lao Cai City and then have a coffee-stop on the bank of Nam Thi river, which is the Vietnam – China border. Enjoy your coffee while taking in the view of China. Head to Road 70 before turning to Luc Yen on Road 152. We go through palm forest all the way via Luc Yen to our Dao friends’ village of Vu Linh, which is located by the side of Thac Ba lake, the biggest man-made lake in Vietnam.

This artificial lake has an area of 23,400 ha and 1,331 islands and hills with diverse ecological environments. The water in the lake is blue and clear, and imprinted with the reflections of the surrounding ancient forest. The thousands of hills and islands feature caves such as the Hum, Cau Cuoi and Bach Xa.

Sapa Motorcycle Tour to Vu Linh – Thac Ba Reservoir

After lunch, we take the boat ride, stop by an island for swimming and discover the particularities of this area: the way villagers paddle their boats, the exotic and odd animals living around, the quiet and peaceful beauty of this huge lake, the lifestyle of the Dao among the thousands of islets.

Day 11: DAY 11: THAC BA - HANOI (180 KM/ APPROX. 5 HOURS) (B/L)
Day 11: DAY 11: THAC BA - HANOI (180 KM/ APPROX. 5 HOURS) (B/L)

After breakfast, we ride southeast on Highway 2 and then branch off to the sleepy town of Phu Tho. We follow the edge of the Red River along the dyke, almost to the point where it merges with the Black River after which they flow together to Hanoi. By now we are very much in the lowlands of the delta plains and the north’s main agricultural areas.

Crossing the Black River by a bridge, we pass through Son Tay and then return to Hanoi on the highway. We should be back to Hanoi before rush-hour (4 pm) because traffic’s getting busier and busier.

Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions? We've got answers! Find common queries about our adventure programs.

Test Despite of the fact that Vietnamese government attempts to outlaw the practice, the US Dollars still acts as an alternative currency which is almost completely interchangeable with Vietnam Dong. Many prices, especially for hotels, tours and expensive restaurants, are still quoted in USD, though you can pay in dong if you’d rather - just check what exchange rate they’re using.

For everyday expenses, we recommend you carry a mix of US Dollars cash and Vietnam Dong. For larger items or when the exchange rate works in your favour, use dollars. For cyclos, local food stalls and small purchases, it’s best to use Vietnam Dong. In either case, make sure you always have a stock of small notes so that there is no need to worry about change.

The short answer is, there's never a bad time to visit Vietnam! Not all seasons are created equal though and there are pros and cons to each.
March - April is typically the best season in terms of weather to visit Vietnam. Expect sun, mild temperatures and limited rain! This also means busy season, so make sure to book in advance if you plan to visit during these months.
May - August is the hotter times of the year in Vietnam and also the rainier season. Don't be too scared of the rain though! It typically only lasts an hour or two per day, if that. This rarely disrupts travel or our tours and you get to enjoy warmer weather.
September - November are a secret gem of a time to visit Vietnam. The temperature becomes more moderate than the summer, rain stops, and the conditions are perfect for trekking or motorcycle trips. This is also when Full Moon Celebrations happen in Vietnam, so it's a particularly festive season to experience Vietnamese culture.
December - February are the coldest months in Vietnam. During these months you may prefer to visit the southern parts of Vietnam which are warmer, and we have many tours that operate there!
