Leaving Hanoi, we headed north, following the romantic road to Hong Son Lake, where the turquoise waters reflect the majestic limestone mountains and lush green islands. The road, with its gentle curves and unobstructed views, offered a refreshing and exhilarating journey. By mid-afternoon, the group arrived at the tranquil Mai Chau Valley, nestled amidst mountains and sprawling golden rice fields. You have time to stroll through the villages, enjoying the fresh air or the peaceful atmosphere before dinner. In the evening, a traditional cultural festival features performances with the unique dances of the Thai ethnic group. Tonight, we will stay in a traditional house, offering an authentic experience of local life and the warm hospitality of the people.
After breakfast at the homestay, we bid farewell to our friendly hosts and begin our journey towards the cool Moc Chau plateau. This highland region is famous for its fragrant tea hills stretching as far as the eye can see, making it an ideal stop to enjoy and purchase local tea products. Along the way, you will clearly feel the cultural diversity of the area – home to the Hmong, Dao, Thai, and Muong communities.
After lunch in Moc Chau, the group continues along the quiet and picturesque Highway 43, passing through pristine landscapes with few tourist footprints, towards the Da River. A gentle ferry ride across Van Yen Lake offers a relaxing break amidst vast nature, before we turn onto a small road leading deeper into the mountains and forests.
By late afternoon, the group arrives in Phu Yen – a small town in Son La province – and rests at a rustic homestay. The genuine warmth and hospitality of the local people will bring a perfect and memorable end to the day.
We begin our day by conquering the legendary Lung Lo Pass – a route linked to significant milestones in Vietnamese history. Approximately 15km long, this pass was once a strategic logistical transport route for the Vietnamese army during the Dien Bien Phu Campaign in 1954. Because of its crucial role, it became a target of continuous bombing by the French army to cut off supplies. The remaining traces have transformed Lung Lo into a symbol of resilience and indomitable spirit.
Today, Lung Lo Pass is recognized as a national historical site in Yen Bai province. For drivers, this route not only presents a challenging terrain but also holds a special emotional depth. The majestic mountain scenery, winding curves, and historical echoes blend together to create one of the most memorable highlights of the journey.
In the late afternoon, the group returns to the hotel to rest and recharge for the exciting experiences that await ahead.
After breakfast, we left Nghia Lo and began our journey towards Mu Cang Chai, following a route that gradually led us up to some of the most majestic mountain ranges in Northern Vietnam. The first leg of the journey wound through gently sloping hills covered in lush green tea plantations, before the road began its ascent to conquer Khau Pha Pass – one of the highest and most famous mountain passes in the region.
The journey unfolded before us a series of picturesque landscapes, with many ideal stops to admire and capture memorable moments. Along the way, we passed through the dreamy Tu Le Valley – a peaceful countryside famous for its graceful terraced rice fields and natural hot springs.
Our final destination was Mu Cang Chai – a famous national scenic site known for its magnificent terraced rice fields carved into the mountainside over generations. This is home to the Hmong people, where their vibrant traditional clothing, ancient customs, and spectacular mountain scenery blend together to create a unique cultural experience. As dusk fell, the group rested at a cozy homestay hosted by local Thai people – a friendly atmosphere that offered a sense of closeness and an authentic glimpse into daily life in the highlands.
Leaving Mu Cang Chai, we continue our journey towards the majestic O Quy Ho Pass – a route often described as "lost in a sea of clouds." Thin wisps of mist drift across the mountain peaks, while below lies a deep valley, revealing one of the most enchanting landscapes in Northern Vietnam. The winding road follows the mountain slopes, passing through tea plantations, cornfields, and rice paddies, each bend reveals a stunning picture of the pristine mountains and forests. This journey combines the exhilaration of conquering the altitude with an appreciation for the unspoiled beauty of nature.
Arriving in Sa Pa – a famous resort town in the Northwest highlands – we spend time exploring its unique atmosphere. One of the highlights is the ancient Sa Pa Stone Church, a French colonial architectural masterpiece and a familiar community center for the locals. On market days, the area around the church becomes vibrant with traditional costumes, lively laughter, and a lively cultural energy, creating a unique charm for Sa Pa. As night fell on the mountaintop, the group checked into a cozy homestay, enjoying the characteristic cool air and the rich cultural blend that makes this town so special.
Start your morning with a light breakfast before embarking on an exciting journey to explore Sa Pa. Glide along picturesque mountain roads, traverse peaceful valleys, and admire the expansive scenery that makes this highland town so special. Follow the winding roads leading to charming villages like Cat Cat or Ta Phin, where you'll have the opportunity to learn about the unique culture of the local ethnic minorities.
Stop at panoramic viewpoints to capture memorable photos, then enjoy a hearty local lunch to recharge for the afternoon. Continue your journey with a relaxing experience at a cozy spa or wellness center – an ideal choice to rejuvenate after hours of driving. End the day with a delightful dinner amidst the characteristic misty atmosphere of Sa Pa, concluding a day of adventurous yet relaxing motorbike experiences.
After breakfast, we leave Sa Pa, descend the pass to Lao Cai, and stop to enjoy coffee by the Nam Thi River – the natural border between Vietnam and China. From Lao Cai, the group travels along National Highway 70 before turning onto the quieter Provincial Road 152, where the scenery gradually changes to lush green palm forests and peaceful countryside on the way to Vu Linh – a Dao village located on Thac Ba Lake.
After lunch, we board a boat to explore the emerald green lake, weaving through small islands scattered across the calm waters. The boat stops at a small island where you can relax and swim amidst the pristine nature.
Along the way, you will encounter scenes of daily life on the lake – locals rowing wooden boats, birds hiding in the trees, and the slow pace of life characteristic of this region. This is a wonderful opportunity to connect with the local Dao community and fully experience the tranquility of their lakeside life.
After breakfast, we begin the final leg of our journey, traveling southeast along National Highway 2 towards Phu Tho Province. The road follows the Red River as it approaches its confluence with the Da River, taking us through fertile plains, lush green rice paddies, and vibrant rural life – a true glimpse into Vietnam's agricultural countryside.
After crossing the Da River, the group continues towards Son Tay and rejoins the main route back to Hanoi. We aim to arrive in the capital before the afternoon rush hour to ensure a smooth conclusion.
As the wheels roll into the streets of Hanoi, our adventure through the mountains and culture of Northern Vietnam officially comes to an end, leaving behind unforgettable memories of majestic scenery and unforgettable experiences.

Test Despite of the fact that Vietnamese government attempts to outlaw the practice, the US Dollars still acts as an alternative currency which is almost completely interchangeable with Vietnam Dong. Many prices, especially for hotels, tours and expensive restaurants, are still quoted in USD, though you can pay in dong if you’d rather - just check what exchange rate they’re using.
For everyday expenses, we recommend you carry a mix of US Dollars cash and Vietnam Dong. For larger items or when the exchange rate works in your favour, use dollars. For cyclos, local food stalls and small purchases, it’s best to use Vietnam Dong. In either case, make sure you always have a stock of small notes so that there is no need to worry about change.
