Begin a 7-day journey across the breathtaking landscapes of Northeast Vietnam. This adventure leads you from the quiet edges of Hanoi to the serene beauty of Ba Be Lake, with each day offering dynamic riding terrain, spectacular mountain passes, and meaningful cultural encounters. Explore the tranquil charm of Thac Ba Lake, the dramatic karst formations of Dong Van, and the awe-inspiring Ban Gioc Waterfall. Along the route, stay with ethnic minority families, immerse yourself in local traditions, and experience the cultural richness of Vietnam’s northern frontier. The itinerary balances thrilling adventure with authentic cultural immersion—perfect for riders seeking both excitement and connection.
Your motorbike adventure begins on the outskirts of Hanoi, where we pick up our bikes and enjoy a thorough tour briefing over breakfast. Leaving the busy capital behind, we follow quiet western backroads along the Red River. Smooth, scenic routes lead us to Thac Ba Lake—one of Vietnam’s most striking freshwater landscapes. A rustic trail then takes us into Vu Linh, a peaceful lakeside village inhabited by the Dzao ethnic community. Their warm hospitality welcomes us into an authentic homestay, offering the perfect introduction to the culture and charm of Northern Vietnam.
After breakfast, we continue deeper into rural Vietnam, riding past gentle streams, winding paths, and small local villages. A highlight of the day is crossing a traditional monkey bridge—a fun challenge and a glimpse into everyday life in the countryside. As we approach Ha Giang Province, the scenery shifts dramatically into towering limestone mountains. Upon arrival, we settle into a traditional Hmong homestay, surrounded by peaceful nature and rich cultural heritage. Tonight, we rest in preparation for the dramatic mountain landscapes ahead.
Today’s ride takes us north toward Dong Van along some of Vietnam’s most iconic mountain routes. The highlight is Tham Ma Pass—a beautifully winding ascent framed by sharp limestone peaks. Each turn reveals impressive panoramic views that define the rugged charm of Ha Giang. By afternoon, we arrive in the historic town of Dong Van and check into a local hotel. With its ancient stone houses and atmospheric surroundings, Dong Van offers a memorable setting for the night.
Prepare for one of the most unforgettable riding days of the tour. We begin with the legendary Ma Pi Leng Pass—famous for its dramatic cliffs, deep valleys, and the emerald Nho Que River winding far below. After lunch in Meo Vac, we enjoy a peaceful bamboo raft experience on the Nho Que River, offering a gentle contrast to the exhilarating morning ride. By late afternoon, we reach Bao Lac and check into a local hotel for a relaxing evening.
Leaving Bao Lac, we head toward one of Vietnam’s most impressive natural wonders: Ban Gioc Waterfall, located right on the border with China. This multi-tiered cascade is a breathtaking sight and one of the highlights of the entire journey. Along the way, we visit Nui Thung Mountain for stunning views of the surrounding karst formations. The day concludes at Sai Gon Ban Gioc Resort, perfectly positioned near the waterfall for a relaxing evening.
After breakfast, we explore Nguom Ngao Cave, known for its vast chambers and remarkable stalactite formations. The journey continues toward Ba Be Lake—one of Vietnam’s largest natural freshwater lakes. Upon arrival, we enjoy a peaceful boat trip across the calm waters, surrounded by forests and limestone cliffs. In the evening, a cultural performance by the local community introduces us to traditional music and dance. Tonight, we stay in a lakeside homestay with serene views over Ba Be.
Our final day takes us from the tranquil shores of Ba Be back toward the lively outskirts of Hanoi. As rural landscapes transition to city surroundings, we reflect on the highlights of our northern loop—mountain passes, cultural encounters, and iconic natural wonders. By around 4 p.m., we return to the capital, marking the end of an unforgettable 7-day adventure through Northeast Vietnam.
Test Despite of the fact that Vietnamese government attempts to outlaw the practice, the US Dollars still acts as an alternative currency which is almost completely interchangeable with Vietnam Dong. Many prices, especially for hotels, tours and expensive restaurants, are still quoted in USD, though you can pay in dong if you’d rather - just check what exchange rate they’re using.
For everyday expenses, we recommend you carry a mix of US Dollars cash and Vietnam Dong. For larger items or when the exchange rate works in your favour, use dollars. For cyclos, local food stalls and small purchases, it’s best to use Vietnam Dong. In either case, make sure you always have a stock of small notes so that there is no need to worry about change.
