Set out on an unforgettable 8-day motorbike journey through the wild heart of Northwest Vietnam, where legendary mountain passes cut through vast, untamed highlands. Beginning in the vibrant pulse of Hanoi, the ride soon drifts into the quiet harmony of the Mai Châu Valley, flows onward through Mộc Châu’s rolling tea hills, and crosses the mighty Đà River aboard a traditional local ferry. Along the way, take on some of the region’s most iconic roads, from the sweeping lines of Lũng Lô Pass to the dramatic curves of Khau Phạ. The landscape then opens into the golden terraced valleys of Mù Cang Chải and the mist-veiled peaks surrounding Sa Pa. The journey comes to a serene close with a gentle boat cruise across Thác Bà Lake — a calm, reflective finale to a ride defined by raw scenery, living culture, and the pure freedom of the open road.
Engines come alive as Hanoi slips away, its restless rhythm replaced by the steady calm of Hòa Bình’s mountains. The road twists through deep valleys and sheer rock walls — raw, unpredictable, alive. Karst towers rise above jade-green waters like ancient sentinels, while cool, mist-laced air sharpens every breath with a sense of release. When Mai Châu opens before us, the setting sun turns drifting dust into liquid gold. The valley feels timeless — where land, labor, and silence exist in quiet harmony. As night falls, firelight flickers to Thai melodies, shadows swaying gently in the dark. In that moment, nothing remains but the road ahead, the engine’s pulse beneath your hand, and the wild spirit of Northwest Vietnam.
Dawn spreads across the valley as engines stir. We climb toward the mountain spine of Lũng Lô Pass — a road etched with history and quiet resilience. The bends tighten and demand focus, yet each turn reveals vast peaks, plunging valleys, and drifting clouds that seem to carry echoes of the past. By evening, we roll into town, engines ticking as they cool, bodies tired but minds clear. The road has taken effort — and given back something quieter, deeper, and lasting.
Morning drifts gently over Nghĩa Lộ as we set off, the road ahead calm and inviting. Tea hills ripple toward the horizon, their greens catching the first light. As we climb, the air thins and clears, light as breath. Then Khau Phạ Pass rises before us — wild and commanding. Each curve reveals clouds sliding over golden terraces, valleys below moving at their own unhurried pace. In Tú Lệ, steam lifts from natural hot springs, mingling with the scent of wet earth and drying grain. By dusk, Mù Cang Chải unfolds in layered terraces carved into the mountainside. The day ends in a Thai stilt house, sharing warm tea and soft laughter as night settles over the highlands.
Leaving Mù Cang Chải behind, we rise into a drifting world of white as Quy Hồ Pass stretches ahead. Cool highland air carries mist across tea hills, terraces, and distant valleys, softening everything it touches. Each bend feels like a quiet exhale, the road gently lifting the weight of the journey. When Sa Pa emerges from the fog, time moves differently. The old Stone Church stands steady at the town’s heart, surrounded by voices, color, and the scent of roasting corn. Night comes softly at our homestay, windows open to pine-scented wind. High above the hum of town, the mountains offer a stillness that settles deep — and stays.
Begin the day with a relaxed breakfast before setting out to explore Sa Pa at an easy pace. The road winds through cool mountain air, mist-softened hills, and quiet valleys that invite you to slow down and simply ride. Along the way, pause in villages such as Cát Cát or Tả Phìn, where daily life unfolds much as it has for generations. Linger at viewpoints for wide mountain panoramas before enjoying a hearty local lunch. In the afternoon, unwind with a spa or wellness stop to soothe tired muscles and restore balance. As evening falls, enjoy a warm dinner beneath Sa Pa’s gentle mountain glow — a calm, satisfying pause in the journey.
After breakfast, we descend from Sa Pa, its cloud-wrapped peaks dissolving into the pale light of morning. Tracing the calm flow of the Nậm Thi River, we pause for a quiet coffee, watching reflections drift past like memories of the road behind us. Here, the border feels less like a divide and more like a moment suspended in time.
Turning south, the landscape softens into slender palms and hushed villages, until Thác Bà Lake opens wide and still. Thousands of small islands rise from the water, emerald and timeless. By boat, we glide across broken silver light as children paddle near the shore and birds drift overhead. Between open sky and water, time slows, and silence settles in — full, gentle, and deeply peaceful.
After breakfast, we set off on the final leg, gliding southeast along Highway 2 toward Phú Thọ, where the highlands gradually release into open lowlands. The Red River runs beside us, wide and unhurried, as rice fields stretch out and farmers and kite-flying children dot the dikes. Crossing the Black River, the scent of wet earth rises from the banks. Soon the road passes through Sơn Tây, where quiet countryside slowly gives way to the edges of the capital.
By afternoon, Hanoi’s skyline settles ahead in a soft haze. The ride slows to an end, but the journey lingers — in tired hands, steady hearts, and the dust we carry home with us.
Test Despite of the fact that Vietnamese government attempts to outlaw the practice, the US Dollars still acts as an alternative currency which is almost completely interchangeable with Vietnam Dong. Many prices, especially for hotels, tours and expensive restaurants, are still quoted in USD, though you can pay in dong if you’d rather - just check what exchange rate they’re using.
For everyday expenses, we recommend you carry a mix of US Dollars cash and Vietnam Dong. For larger items or when the exchange rate works in your favour, use dollars. For cyclos, local food stalls and small purchases, it’s best to use Vietnam Dong. In either case, make sure you always have a stock of small notes so that there is no need to worry about change.
