This 7-day Vietnam motorcycle tour takes you deep into the remote landscapes of Northwest Vietnam, where winding mountain roads and untouched scenery define the journey. Starting from Hanoi, the route leads through dramatic terrain shaped by limestone mountains, terraced rice fields, and quiet valleys.

Leaving Hanoi, we ride north alongside the peaceful Hong Son Lake, where scattered islands rise from emerald waters framed by dense forests and limestone peaks. The scenery unfolds beautifully as we continue on smooth, winding roads through Northern Vietnam’s countryside.

By afternoon, we arrive in Mai Chau, with time to wander the village or relax before dinner. In the evening, enjoy a traditional Thai dance performance that offers insight into local culture. We then settle into charming stilt houses for the night, fully immersed in the region’s unique atmosphere.

After breakfast at the homestay, we say goodbye to our hosts and ride from Mai Chau toward Moc Chau, where we stop for lunch. Known for its vast tea plantations, Moc Chau is an ideal place to sample or pick up some of the region’s finest tea. The area is also home to a variety of ethnic communities, including the Green H’mong, Dzao, Thai, and Muong.
In the afternoon, we take the quieter Road 43, descending toward the Da River. After crossing the reservoir by Van Yen ferry, we continue along a scenic, winding secondary road through the mountains. By late afternoon, we arrive in Phu Yen, a small town in Son La Province, where we spend the night in a simple homestay and enjoy its authentic, local atmosphere.

In the morning, we continue our ride toward the historic Lung Lo Pass before joining Road 32. This 15-kilometer pass once played an important role during the 1954 Dien Bien Phu campaign, serving as a key supply route for the Vietnamese resistance. Today, it stands as a recognized national heritage site in Yen Bai Province.
The road offers a mix of challenging curves and rewarding scenery, making it a memorable highlight of the journey. By the end of the day, we arrive at our hotel, where you can relax and recharge after an eventful ride.

After breakfast, we set off from Nghia Lo toward Mu Cang Chai, riding through increasingly dramatic mountain landscapes. The route winds past rolling hills of lush tea plantations before climbing higher into rugged terrain as we approach Khau Pha Pass one of Northern Vietnam’s most iconic mountain passes.
This section offers some of the most breathtaking views of the trip, with plenty of scenic stops along the way. We also pass through Tu Le Valley, a picturesque area nestled at the base of the mountains.
In Mu Cang Chai, we take time to explore this stunning region, famous for its terraced rice fields recognized as a national heritage site. Home to the Hmong community, the area provides a rich cultural experience along with incredible photo opportunities.
We end the day with an overnight stay in a traditional Thai homestay, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere and local hospitality.

We begin the day departing from Mu Cang Chai, riding through the spectacular Quy Ho Pass, where clouds drift across dramatic mountain landscapes. Along the way, the scenery unfolds with expansive tea, corn, and rice fields, creating a vibrant patchwork across the hills. Navigating winding passes and high mountain roads brings both excitement and a rewarding sense of achievement.
Arriving in Sapa, one of Northern Vietnam’s most well-known highland destinations, there is plenty to explore. A highlight is the Sapa Stone Church, a historic landmark from the French colonial era that stands as both a cultural and spiritual symbol. The area around the church is lively, often filled with ethnic minority communities gathering to trade and connect, offering a glimpse into the region’s rich cultural life.
We spend the night in a local homestay in Sapa, enjoying the cool mountain atmosphere and peaceful surroundings.

After breakfast, we descend from Sapa to Lao Cai, stopping for coffee beside the Nam Thi River, which marks the border between Vietnam and China. It’s a great spot to relax and take in the unique view across the river.
Continuing along Road 70, we turn onto Road 152 toward Luc Yen, riding through stretches of lush palm forest. By afternoon, we arrive in Vu Linh, a peaceful village of the Dao community located along the shores of Thac Ba Lake—Vietnam’s largest man-made lake. Spanning over 23,000 hectares, the lake is dotted with more than a thousand islands, creating a rich and diverse natural landscape.
After lunch, we take a boat trip across the calm waters, stopping at one of the islands for a swim. Along the way, you’ll observe daily life on the lake, from local fishing activities to glimpses of wildlife, all set against a backdrop of forested hills and quiet surroundings. This is a perfect opportunity to experience the Dao culture while enjoying the serene beauty of Thac Ba Lake.

After breakfast, we ride southeast along Highway 2 toward the quiet town of Phu Tho. Following the Red River along its dyke, the route leads us through peaceful countryside toward the point where it meets the Black River before both flow onward to Hanoi.
At this stage, we are deep in the fertile delta plains—Vietnam’s agricultural heartland—where rice fields and rural life dominate the landscape. Crossing the Black River by bridge, we pass through Son Tay before continuing back to Hanoi via the highway. We aim to arrive in the city by late afternoon, before traffic begins to build.

Test Despite of the fact that Vietnamese government attempts to outlaw the practice, the US Dollars still acts as an alternative currency which is almost completely interchangeable with Vietnam Dong. Many prices, especially for hotels, tours and expensive restaurants, are still quoted in USD, though you can pay in dong if you’d rather - just check what exchange rate they’re using.

For everyday expenses, we recommend you carry a mix of US Dollars cash and Vietnam Dong. For larger items or when the exchange rate works in your favour, use dollars. For cyclos, local food stalls and small purchases, it’s best to use Vietnam Dong. In either case, make sure you always have a stock of small notes so that there is no need to worry about change.

The short answer is, there's never a bad time to visit Vietnam! Not all seasons are created equal though and there are pros and cons to each.
March - April is typically the best season in terms of weather to visit Vietnam. Expect sun, mild temperatures and limited rain! This also means busy season, so make sure to book in advance if you plan to visit during these months.
May - August is the hotter times of the year in Vietnam and also the rainier season. Don't be too scared of the rain though! It typically only lasts an hour or two per day, if that. This rarely disrupts travel or our tours and you get to enjoy warmer weather.
September - November are a secret gem of a time to visit Vietnam. The temperature becomes more moderate than the summer, rain stops, and the conditions are perfect for trekking or motorcycle trips. This is also when Full Moon Celebrations happen in Vietnam, so it's a particularly festive season to experience Vietnamese culture.
December - February are the coldest months in Vietnam. During these months you may prefer to visit the southern parts of Vietnam which are warmer, and we have many tours that operate there!
