This 7-day Northwest Vietnam motorbike adventure takes riders through some of the most spectacular mountain landscapes in Northern Vietnam. Beginning in Hanoi, the journey passes through the peaceful valleys of Mai Chau and Phu Yen, continues to the cultural heartlands of Nghia Lo and Mu Cang Chai, and reaches the cool mountain town of Sapa.

After exploring Sapa, the route descends to the tranquil shores of Thac Ba Lake before returning to Hanoi. With legendary mountain passes, authentic ethnic minority cultures, and breathtaking scenery throughout, this itinerary offers the perfect combination of adventure, cultural discovery, and unforgettable riding.

Your Northwest Vietnam motorbike adventure begins as you leave the bustling streets of Hanoi and ride west toward the mountains of Hoa Binh Province. The route quickly transitions into scenic countryside, with rice fields, limestone formations, and winding roads creating an exciting introduction to the journey.

Crossing Thung Khe Pass, you are rewarded with sweeping views over lush valleys before descending into Mai Chau. This peaceful region is known for its traditional stilt houses, White Thai ethnic culture, and warm hospitality.

Day 2: (21st March, 2027) MAI CHAU – PHU YEN (~180 KM / ~5–6 HOURS) (B/L/D)

Today’s ride follows quiet mountain roads through remote valleys and traditional villages. The route offers a perfect balance of gentle curves, scenic landscapes, and authentic encounters with local communities.

Arriving in Phu Yen, a peaceful district in Son La Province, you will enjoy a relaxed atmosphere surrounded by green hills and rice fields. This lesser-known destination provides a truly off-the-beaten-path experience.

Day 3: (22nd March, 2027) PHU YEN – NGHIA LO (~160 KM / ~5–6 HOURS) (B/L/D)

Leaving Phu Yen, you continue north through scenic back roads and fertile valleys. The route winds through quiet countryside, where traditional villages and terraced fields reflect the rich cultural heritage of the region.

Upon arrival in Nghia Lo, located in the Muong Lo Valley, you enter one of the most important cultural centers of the Thai ethnic minority. The welcoming atmosphere makes it an ideal overnight stop.

Day 4: (23rd March, 2027) NGHIA LO – MU CANG CHAI (~100 KM / ~4–5 HOURS) (B/L/D)

This is one of the most spectacular riding days of the journey. The road climbs the legendary Khau Pha Pass, one of Vietnam’s most famous mountain roads, offering extraordinary views across endless valleys and terraced hillsides.

Descending into Mu Cang Chai, you arrive in a region renowned for its world-famous rice terraces. Carved into steep mountains by generations of local farmers, these landscapes are among the most iconic in Vietnam.

Day 5: (24th March, 2027) MU CANG CHAI – SAPA (~160 KM / ~6–7 HOURS) (B/L/D)

Today’s route continues north through dramatic mountain terrain and remote ethnic villages. The roads are both challenging and highly rewarding, with stunning scenery unfolding at every turn.

Arriving in Sapa, you are welcomed by cool mountain air, vibrant local culture, and panoramic views of some of the highest peaks in Vietnam.

Day 6: (25th March, 2027) SAPA – THAC BA LAKE (~200 KM / ~6–7 HOURS) (B/L/D)

Leaving the mountains behind, the journey descends through scenic countryside toward the tranquil shores of Thac Ba Lake. The pace becomes more relaxed as the route winds through peaceful rural landscapes.

Upon arrival, enjoy the calm atmosphere of one of Vietnam’s largest lakes. Surrounded by forested hills and traditional villages, this serene destination offers a memorable final night of the tour.

Day 7: (26th March, 2027) THAC BA LAKE – HANOI (~180 KM / ~5–6 HOURS) (B/L)

On the final day, you ride south through quiet countryside and fertile plains as you make your way back to Hanoi. The route provides time to reflect on the unforgettable mountain roads, cultural encounters, and extraordinary landscapes experienced throughout the journey.

Test Despite of the fact that Vietnamese government attempts to outlaw the practice, the US Dollars still acts as an alternative currency which is almost completely interchangeable with Vietnam Dong. Many prices, especially for hotels, tours and expensive restaurants, are still quoted in USD, though you can pay in dong if you’d rather - just check what exchange rate they’re using.

For everyday expenses, we recommend you carry a mix of US Dollars cash and Vietnam Dong. For larger items or when the exchange rate works in your favour, use dollars. For cyclos, local food stalls and small purchases, it’s best to use Vietnam Dong. In either case, make sure you always have a stock of small notes so that there is no need to worry about change.

The short answer is, there's never a bad time to visit Vietnam! Not all seasons are created equal though and there are pros and cons to each.

March - April is typically the best season in terms of weather to visit Vietnam. Expect sun, mild temperatures and limited rain! This also means busy season, so make sure to book in advance if you plan to visit during these months.

May - August is the hotter times of the year in Vietnam and also the rainier season. Don't be too scared of the rain though! It typically only lasts an hour or two per day, if that. This rarely disrupts travel or our tours and you get to enjoy warmer weather.

September - November are a secret gem of a time to visit Vietnam. The temperature becomes more moderate than the summer, rain stops, and the conditions are perfect for trekking or motorcycle trips. This is also when Full Moon Celebrations happen in Vietnam, so it's a particularly festive season to experience Vietnamese culture.

December - February are the coldest months in Vietnam. During these months you may prefer to visit the southern parts of Vietnam which are warmer, and we have many tours that operate there!
