Your adventure begins this morning at Frontier Travel Vietnam’s headquarters in Hanoi, where you’ll meet your fellow riders, experienced tour guide, and support crew. Following a comprehensive tour briefing and motorcycle handover, it’s time to leave the bustling capital behind and head towards Vietnam’s spectacular northern mountains.

As the city gradually fades into peaceful countryside, the scenery transforms into rolling hills, limestone mountains, and picturesque rural villages. Riding alongside the beautiful Hoa Binh Lake, you’ll enjoy panoramic views of emerald waters dotted with limestone islands, creating one of the first unforgettable highlights of the journey.

After a relaxing lunch en route, continue riding along quiet mountain roads before arriving in the beautiful Mai Chau Valley, home to the White Thai ethnic minority. Surrounded by lush rice paddies and traditional wooden stilt houses, this peaceful valley offers a wonderful introduction to rural Vietnam.

In the evening, enjoy a traditional Thai dinner followed by a cultural dance performance before spending your first night in an authentic stilt house.

Day 2: 29 Dec 2026: Mai Chau → Phu Yen (190 KM / ~6 HOURS) (B/L/D)

Wake up to the peaceful atmosphere of Mai Chau before beginning one of the most scenic rides of the tour.

Today’s journey follows the Da River through spectacular mountain landscapes rarely visited by international travellers. Along the route, you’ll pass archaeological sites where ancient stone tools dating back thousands of years were discovered, offering a fascinating glimpse into Vietnam’s early history.

A local ferry carries the group across the Da River before the road winds through dramatic valleys, quiet villages, and remote mountain scenery. The combination of smooth roads, sweeping bends, and breathtaking views makes today a favourite among many riders.

After lunch in Bac Yen, continue riding north through untouched countryside before arriving in the welcoming town of Phu Yen.

Day 3: 30 Dec 2026: Phu Yen → Nghia Lo (130 KM / ~6 HOURS) (B/L/D)

Today’s route showcases the quieter side of Northern Vietnam as you travel through picturesque valleys, peaceful villages, and winding mountain roads.

The roads twist through forests and rice terraces while offering countless opportunities to stop for photographs and experience daily life in rural Vietnam. Friendly locals, grazing buffalo, and colourful ethnic minority communities make every kilometre an enjoyable experience.

Following lunch at a local restaurant, continue through beautiful countryside before reaching Nghia Lo, one of Northern Vietnam’s most fertile valleys and an important cultural centre of the Thai ethnic people.

Relax this evening before tomorrow’s spectacular ride to Sapa.

Day 4: 31 Dec 2026: Nghia Lo → Sapa (230 KM / ~6 HOURS) (B/L/D)

Today is one of the most spectacular riding days of the expedition.

Leaving Nghia Lo behind, the road climbs steadily into the Hoang Lien Son Mountain Range, offering breathtaking panoramic views across valleys, tea plantations, and endless rice terraces.

One of today’s highlights is riding the legendary O Quy Ho Pass—one of Vietnam’s famous Four Great Mountain Passes. The winding roads, dramatic cliffs, and ever-changing mountain scenery make this an unforgettable experience for every rider.

By late afternoon, arrive in the famous mountain town of Sapa. After checking into your accommodation, there is time to explore the lively streets, visit the historic French-built Stone Church, browse the local market, or simply relax with a coffee overlooking the surrounding mountains.

New Year’s Eve Celebration

Tonight we celebrate the final evening of 2026 together in Sapa. The town comes alive with festive lights, music, local celebrations, and a vibrant atmosphere, creating a unique and memorable way to welcome the New Year surrounded by Vietnam’s highest mountains.

Day 5: 1 Jan 2027: Sapa Exploration Day (B)

Welcome to the first day of 2027.

Today is yours to enjoy at your own pace while discovering one of Vietnam’s most famous mountain destinations.

You may choose to visit Fansipan Mountain, known as the “Roof of Indochina.” A scenic mountain railway followed by the world’s longest three-rope cable car carries visitors close to the 3,143-metre summit, where breathtaking panoramic views await.

Alternatively, spend the day exploring Muong Hoa Valley, home to the beautiful villages of Lao Chai and Ta Van. Walking through spectacular rice terraces while meeting the local H’mong and Giay communities offers an authentic glimpse into mountain life.

For those seeking a shorter excursion, Cat Cat Village provides beautiful scenery, waterfalls, and traditional H’mong culture just outside Sapa town.

Enjoy the remainder of the afternoon relaxing in one of Sapa’s cafés before another exciting riding day begins tomorrow.

Day 6: 2 January 2027: Sapa → Ha Giang (230 KM / ~6 HOURS) (B/L/D)

Leaving Sapa behind, today’s journey heads east toward the frontier province of Ha Giang.

The roads become increasingly remote as they weave through dramatic mountain passes and traditional villages inhabited by the Red Dao, Flower H’mong, Tay, and Nung ethnic minorities.

The route offers an enjoyable combination of sweeping curves, quiet roads, and spectacular mountain scenery before arriving in Ha Giang City—the gateway to Vietnam’s most famous motorcycle region.

Depending on timing, we may stop to relax at the natural hot springs near Thanh Ha.

Day 7: 3 Jan 2027: Ha Giang → Dong Van (150 KM / ~6 HOURS) (B/L/D)

Today we enter the world-famous Dong Van Karst Plateau UNESCO Global Geopark.

After completing the necessary permit procedures, we ride through Quan Ba Heaven Gate and stop to admire the famous Fairy Bosom Mountains before continuing towards Yen Minh.

Along the way, visit the historic Vuong Palace, once home to the H’mong Royal Family during the French colonial period, and explore the charming ancient village of Pho Bang with its centuries-old clay houses.

Late in the afternoon, arrive in Dong Van Ancient Town, surrounded by towering limestone peaks.

Day 8: 4 Jan 2027: Dong Van → Meo Vac → Bao Lac (120 KM / ~4 HOURS) (B/L/D)

Prepare for one of the highlights of the entire expedition.

This morning we conquer the legendary Ma Pi Leng Pass, widely regarded as Vietnam’s most spectacular mountain road. Riding high above the emerald waters of the Nho Que River, the panoramic views across the dramatic limestone canyon are simply unforgettable.

Descending into Meo Vac, we continue through remote mountain villages before reaching Bao Lac, a fascinating meeting point for numerous ethnic minority communities living throughout Northeast Vietnam.

Day 9: 5 Jan 2027: Bao Lac → Ban Gioc Waterfall (210 KM / ~4 HOURS) (B/L/D)

Today’s journey combines fascinating culture with incredible scenery.

Visit a traditional Lo Lo ethnic village where colourful costumes, wooden stilt houses, and ancient customs have been preserved for generations.

The ride then continues through beautiful countryside before reaching Ban Gioc Waterfall, one of the largest and most spectacular international border waterfalls in the world.

Spend the evening relaxing at a beautiful resort beside one of Vietnam’s greatest natural wonders.

Day 10: 6 Jan 2027: Ban Gioc Waterfall → Ba Be Lake (200 KM / ~6 HOURS) (B/L/D)

This morning we explore the magnificent Ban Gioc Waterfall before visiting nearby Truc Lam Ban Gioc Pagoda, offering spectacular panoramic views across the waterfall and into China.

Continue to Nguom Ngao Cave, a remarkable limestone cave stretching over 2.7 kilometres and famous for its impressive stalactites and stalagmites formed over millions of years.

In the afternoon, ride through peaceful mountain countryside towards Ba Be National Park, home to Vietnam’s largest natural freshwater lake.

Day 11: 7 Jan 2027: Ba Be Lake → Hanoi (220 KM / ~7 HOURS) (B/L)

Our final riding day begins early as we leave the peaceful surroundings of Ba Be National Park and begin the journey back towards Hanoi.

The route offers one final opportunity to enjoy Northern Vietnam’s mountain scenery before gradually descending into the fertile Red River Delta.

Arriving back in Hanoi during the afternoon, we return our motorcycles and celebrate the successful completion of an unforgettable 11-day motorcycle expedition.

Although the ride comes to an end, the memories of welcoming the New Year among Vietnam’s spectacular mountains, conquering legendary roads, and discovering remarkable cultures will remain with you long after the journey is over.

Test Despite of the fact that Vietnamese government attempts to outlaw the practice, the US Dollars still acts as an alternative currency which is almost completely interchangeable with Vietnam Dong. Many prices, especially for hotels, tours and expensive restaurants, are still quoted in USD, though you can pay in dong if you’d rather - just check what exchange rate they’re using.

For everyday expenses, we recommend you carry a mix of US Dollars cash and Vietnam Dong. For larger items or when the exchange rate works in your favour, use dollars. For cyclos, local food stalls and small purchases, it’s best to use Vietnam Dong. In either case, make sure you always have a stock of small notes so that there is no need to worry about change.

The short answer is, there's never a bad time to visit Vietnam! Not all seasons are created

equal though and there are pros and cons to each.

March - April is typically the best season in terms of weather to visit Vietnam. Expect sun, mild

temperatures and limited rain! This also means busy season, so make sure to book in advance

if you plan to visit during these months.

May - August is the hotter times of the year in Vietnam and also the

rainier season. Don't be too scared of the rain though! It typically only lasts an hour or two

per day, if that. This rarely disrupts travel or our tours and you get to enjoy warmer weather.

September - November are a secret gem of a time to visit Vietnam. The temperature

becomes more moderate than the summer, rain stops, and the conditions are perfect

for trekking or motorcycle trips. This is also when Full Moon Celebrations happen

in Vietnam, so it's a particularly festive season to experience Vietnamese culture.

December - February are the coldest months in Vietnam. During these months

you may prefer to visit the southern parts of Vietnam which are warmer, and we have many tours that operate there!
