Leaving behind the bustling city of Hanoi, our journey unfolds to the north, where the tranquil Hong Son Lake graces our side. The landscape paints a mesmerizing picture, with a delightful cluster of islands nestled amidst lush forests and towering limestone peaks. As we venture further northward on the well-paved road, we encounter more enchanting vistas along the way. Come afternoon, we reach the charming destination of Mai Chau, granting us precious moments to explore the city before the evening's meal. Following dinner, a traditional Thai Dance performance awaits us, providing an immersive cultural experience. Our night is spent in the cozy embrace of Thai stilt houses.

Following a hearty breakfast at the welcoming homestay, we bid farewell to the hospitable villagers and embark on our journey from Mai Chau, heading towards the picturesque destination of Moc Chau. Here, we indulge in a satisfying lunch break. Moc Chau, a highland town, is renowned for producing some of Vietnam's finest tea, offering an excellent opportunity to stock up on this local specialty. The region is also a melting pot of diverse ethnic groups, including the Green H'mong, Dzao, Thai, and Muong people.
Post-lunch, we venture onto the less-traveled Road 43, leading us to the scenic Da River and guiding us across the reservoir via the Van Yen ferry. We then follow a serpentine secondary road, unveiling breathtaking vistas, until we reach the mountain town of Phu Yen, a district within the Son La Province nestled in the Northwestern region of Vietnam. Our accommodation for the night is a modest homestay, offering a unique and authentic local experience.

In the morning, our journey continues as we navigate the spectacular Lung Lo Pass before ascending along Road 32. Lung Lo Pass, stretching over 15 kilometers, bears historical significance dating back to the First Indochina War. It served as a crucial route for the Vietnamese resistance forces, enabling the transport of weapons, essential goods, and sustenance during the Dien Bien Phu campaign of 1954. This strategic pass endured heavy bombardment by the French, who aimed to sever the front lines from the rear.
Situated in the northern province of Yen Bai, Lung Lo Pass is a recognized national heritage site. While the ride through this pass presents challenges, the rewards are immeasurable. At the end of the day's journey, we find respite and relaxation in a comfortable hotel for the night.

Following a hearty breakfast, we set out on our journey from Nghia Lo to Mu Cang Chai, a ride that traverses breathtaking mountainous terrain. As we progress, the landscape transforms into fertile, undulating hills adorned with vibrant green tea plantations, and the mountains loom larger on the horizon. Our route takes us over the Khau Pha Pass, celebrated as one of Northern Vietnam's four greatest passes.
This leg of the journey unfolds on some of the most scenic roads, presenting numerous opportunities to pause and capture the stunning vistas. We'll cross through Tu Le, a picturesque valley nestled at the base of the pass.
A full day is dedicated to exploring the natural splendor of this mountainous district. Mu Cang Chai, renowned for its terraced rice paddies, holds the distinction of being designated as a national heritage site in Vietnam. It is also the ancestral home of the Hmong minority tribe, known for their rural way of life, vibrant ethnic attire, and providing an exquisite canvas for photography enthusiasts.
As the day concludes, we settle into the comforts of a homestay hosted by the welcoming Thai ethnic community, ensuring an immersive cultural experience.

After breakfast, we ride from Sapa to Lao Cai City, pausing for coffee along the Nam Thi River, overlooking the Vietnam-China border. Our route takes us through palm forests and Luc Yen to Vu Linh village by Thac Ba Lake, Vietnam's largest man-made lake. Thac Ba Lake, spanning 23,400 hectares with 1,331 islands, captivates with its blue, clear waters reflecting ancient forests. After lunch, a boat ride allows us to swim and explore the unique aspects of the area, from the villagers' boat navigation to the serene beauty of the lake and the Dao community's lifestyle among islets.

Post-breakfast, our journey takes us southeast on Highway 2 before veering towards the tranquil town of Phu Tho. Along the dyke, we trace the Red River's edge, witnessing its convergence with the Black River before flowing harmoniously towards Hanoi. Now in the lowlands of the delta plains, surrounded by the north's primary agricultural regions. A bridge over the Black River guides our path through Son Tay, leading us back to Hanoi via the highway.

Anticipate a return before the bustling rush-hour at 4 pm, navigating through the increasing traffic as the day progresses.

Test Despite of the fact that Vietnamese government attempts to outlaw the practice, the US Dollars still acts as an alternative currency which is almost completely interchangeable with Vietnam Dong. Many prices, especially for hotels, tours and expensive restaurants, are still quoted in USD, though you can pay in dong if you’d rather - just check what exchange rate they’re using.

For everyday expenses, we recommend you carry a mix of US Dollars cash and Vietnam Dong. For larger items or when the exchange rate works in your favour, use dollars. For cyclos, local food stalls and small purchases, it’s best to use Vietnam Dong. In either case, make sure you always have a stock of small notes so that there is no need to worry about change.

The short answer is, there's never a bad time to visit Vietnam! Not all seasons are created equal though and there are pros and cons to each.
March - April is typically the best season in terms of weather to visit Vietnam. Expect sun, mild temperatures and limited rain! This also means busy season, so make sure to book in advance if you plan to visit during these months.
May - August is the hotter times of the year in Vietnam and also the rainier season. Don't be too scared of the rain though! It typically only lasts an hour or two per day, if that. This rarely disrupts travel or our tours and you get to enjoy warmer weather.
September - November are a secret gem of a time to visit Vietnam. The temperature becomes more moderate than the summer, rain stops, and the conditions are perfect for trekking or motorcycle trips. This is also when Full Moon Celebrations happen in Vietnam, so it's a particularly festive season to experience Vietnamese culture.
December - February are the coldest months in Vietnam. During these months you may prefer to visit the southern parts of Vietnam which are warmer, and we have many tours that operate there!
