Your motorbike adventure begins on the outskirts of Hanoi, where we pick up our bikes and enjoy a detailed tour briefing over breakfast. Leaving the city behind, we follow the quiet western routes along the Red River—smooth, scenic roads ideal for riding. Our first highlight is the expansive Thac Ba Lake, one of Vietnam’s most beautiful freshwater landscapes. From here, a rustic trail leads us to Vu Linh, a lakeside village home to the Dzao ethnic community. Their warm hospitality welcomes us into an authentic homestay, marking the perfect start to our journey through Northern Vietnam. Tonight, we settle in with the Dzao hosts and enjoy a peaceful evening by the lake.
After breakfast, we depart Vu Linh and ride deeper into the countryside, passing winding roads, gentle streams, and charming local villages. Along the way, we cross an iconic monkey bridge—an adventurous moment and a unique glimpse into rural life. The scenery gradually transforms as we approach the mountainous province of Ha Giang. Upon arrival, we check into a traditional Hmong homestay, where the atmosphere is serene and culturally rich. Surrounded by the rhythms of local life and starlit mountain skies, we unwind and prepare for the dramatic landscapes that await us tomorrow.
We continue north toward Dong Van, riding through some of Vietnam’s most iconic mountain passes. The highlight of the day is Tham Ma Pass, a thrilling, winding ascent framed by dramatic limestone peaks. Every turn presents a new panoramic view, showcasing the rugged beauty that defines this region. By afternoon, we arrive in the historic town of Dong Van and settle into a local hotel. With ancient architecture, stone alleyways, and mountain surroundings, Dong Van offers a peaceful and atmospheric setting for the night.
Today delivers some of the most unforgettable riding of the entire tour. We begin with the legendary Ma Pi Leng Pass, often regarded as Vietnam’s most stunning mountain road. Towering cliffs, deep valleys, and the emerald Nho Que River form a dramatic backdrop as we ride along the ridge. After lunch in Meo Vac, we continue with a unique experience—a bamboo raft ride on the Nho Que River, offering a tranquil contrast to the earlier mountain roads. By late afternoon, we reach Bao Lac and check into a local hotel for a well-deserved rest.
Leaving Bao Lac behind, we ride toward one of Northern Vietnam’s most impressive natural landmarks: Ban Gioc Waterfall. Located on the border with China, this multi-tiered cascade is among the region’s most spectacular sights. We also visit Nui Thung Mountain for panoramic views of the surrounding karst formations. The day ends at Sai Gon Ban Gioc Resort, ideally situated near the waterfall, where we relax and reflect on a day filled with extraordinary scenery.
After breakfast, we explore Nguom Ngao Cave, a vast limestone wonder filled with striking stalactite formations. The ride continues toward Ba Be Lake, one of Vietnam’s largest natural lakes. Upon arrival, we take a peaceful boat trip across its calm waters, surrounded by forested cliffs and quiet fishing villages. In the evening, a cultural performance by the local ethnic community introduces us to traditional music and dance. Tonight’s accommodation is a lakeside homestay with a serene view of Ba Be.
Our final day takes us from the tranquil shores of Ba Be back toward Hanoi. The scenery shifts gradually from rural landscapes to the lively outskirts of the capital. By around 4 p.m., we complete our Northern Vietnam motorbike loop, ending the adventure with unforgettable memories of mountain roads, ethnic cultures, and breathtaking natural beauty.
Test Despite of the fact that Vietnamese government attempts to outlaw the practice, the US Dollars still acts as an alternative currency which is almost completely interchangeable with Vietnam Dong. Many prices, especially for hotels, tours and expensive restaurants, are still quoted in USD, though you can pay in dong if you’d rather - just check what exchange rate they’re using.
For everyday expenses, we recommend you carry a mix of US Dollars cash and Vietnam Dong. For larger items or when the exchange rate works in your favour, use dollars. For cyclos, local food stalls and small purchases, it’s best to use Vietnam Dong. In either case, make sure you always have a stock of small notes so that there is no need to worry about change.
