Experience the best of Northwest Vietnam on a 7-day motorcycle adventure through stunning mountain landscapes, winding passes, and vibrant ethnic communities. From the peaceful valleys of Mai Chau to the iconic rice terraces of Mu Cang Chai and the mountain town of Sapa, this journey showcases Northern Vietnam's most spectacular roads and scenery.
Perfect for riders seeking both adventure and cultural discovery, this tour combines breathtaking rides, authentic local experiences, and unforgettable mountain landscapes.

Leaving the bustling streets of Hanoi behind, we head west toward the peaceful mountains of Hoa Binh Province. The ride offers a gradual transition from urban landscapes to rolling countryside, where rice fields, limestone formations, and quiet villages begin to dominate the scenery.
Along the way, we stop at scenic viewpoints overlooking the emerald waters of Hoa Binh Lake, one of Northern Vietnam's largest reservoirs. The winding roads and fresh mountain air provide a perfect introduction to the adventure ahead.
By mid-afternoon, we arrive in the picturesque Mai Chau Valley. Surrounded by lush mountains and traditional stilt-house villages, Mai Chau is home to the White Thai ethnic community. In the evening, enjoy a traditional dance performance and experience the warm hospitality that has made this valley one of Vietnam's most beloved cultural destinations.
After breakfast, we leave Mai Chau and ride toward the cool plateau of Moc Chau. Known for its vast tea plantations and fertile highlands, this region offers sweeping views and a refreshing climate throughout the year.
The route continues along quiet mountain roads, passing through remote ethnic communities and beautiful rural landscapes rarely visited by mainstream tourism. Following lunch, we take Road 43 toward the Da River, one of Northern Vietnam's most important waterways.
A peaceful ferry crossing on the Van Yen Reservoir offers a unique highlight of the day before we continue deeper into the mountains. By late afternoon, we arrive in the tranquil town of Phu Yen, where a welcoming homestay provides an authentic glimpse into local life.
Today's ride takes us across one of Northwest Vietnam's most historic mountain routes—Lung Lo Pass. Once a vital supply corridor during the Dien Bien Phu Campaign, this rugged pass played an important role in Vietnam's struggle for independence and remains a powerful symbol of resilience.
As we climb through the mountains, spectacular viewpoints reveal valleys, forests, and distant peaks stretching across the horizon. The road itself is both scenic and rewarding, offering a perfect blend of riding enjoyment and historical significance.
By late afternoon, we descend into Nghia Lo, a peaceful town nestled in the Muong Lo Valley. After checking into our accommodation, there is time to relax and enjoy the calm atmosphere of this charming highland destination.
This morning, we continue north toward one of Vietnam's most celebrated mountain regions. The road gradually climbs through tea-covered hills before reaching the legendary Khau Pha Pass, one of the highest and most scenic mountain passes in the country.
Along the way, we stop at several panoramic viewpoints overlooking dramatic valleys and endless layers of mountain ridges. The route also passes through Tu Le, a beautiful valley famous for its rice terraces, traditional villages, and natural hot springs.
By afternoon, we arrive in Mu Cang Chai, a nationally recognized heritage area renowned for its spectacular terraced rice fields carved into steep mountainsides. Home to the Hmong people, the region offers a fascinating blend of natural beauty and vibrant cultural traditions. Tonight, we stay in a welcoming local homestay surrounded by some of Northern Vietnam's most iconic landscapes.
After breakfast, we descend from the mountains toward Lao Cai City, where we pause for a coffee beside the Nam Thi River marking the border between Vietnam and China. This peaceful stop offers a unique perspective on life along one of the country's international frontiers.
Continuing south, we follow a series of scenic backroads through Luc Yen District, an area known for its palm forests, gemstone mining communities, and quiet rural landscapes. The route gradually leads us toward the shores of Thac Ba Lake.
Covering more than 23,000 hectares and dotted with over 1,300 islands, Thac Ba is one of Vietnam's largest and most beautiful artificial lakes. After arriving in Vu Linh Village, we board a small boat to explore the tranquil waters, visit a secluded island, and experience the peaceful lifestyle of the Dao ethnic community living along the shoreline.
Our final riding day begins with a leisurely breakfast overlooking the lake before we set off toward Hanoi. The route follows quiet countryside roads through Phu Tho Province, a region known as one of the cradles of Vietnamese civilization.
As we ride through fertile delta landscapes, scenes of traditional rural life unfold around us—green rice fields, grazing water buffalo, and bustling village markets. The peaceful roads offer a relaxing conclusion to a week of mountain adventures.
Crossing the Black River and passing through Son Tay, we gradually return to the capital. Arriving in Hanoi during the afternoon, we conclude an unforgettable journey through Northwest Vietnam's spectacular mountains, diverse cultures, and legendary roads.

Test Despite of the fact that Vietnamese government attempts to outlaw the practice, the US Dollars still acts as an alternative currency which is almost completely interchangeable with Vietnam Dong. Many prices, especially for hotels, tours and expensive restaurants, are still quoted in USD, though you can pay in dong if you’d rather - just check what exchange rate they’re using.
For everyday expenses, we recommend you carry a mix of US Dollars cash and Vietnam Dong. For larger items or when the exchange rate works in your favour, use dollars. For cyclos, local food stalls and small purchases, it’s best to use Vietnam Dong. In either case, make sure you always have a stock of small notes so that there is no need to worry about change.
