Pu Luong is a nature reserve about 170 kilometers or about 4 hours south of Hanoi. It is located in Ba Thuoc and Quan Hoa districts of Thanh Hoa Province. Pu Luong is bordered by Tan Lac, Lac Son and Mai Chau districts. It is truly a sight to be seen on a Vietnam motorcycle tour and Vietnam trekking tour! Limestone-peaked terrain, surrounded by mountains and covered with gorgeous rice terraces, is relatively untouched by mass tourism and is inhabited with mostly ethnic minority villages. The majority of the population comes from ethnic Thai descent and is home to very distinct culture. The children go to school and learn all subjects in the Vietnamese language, but at home they are still used to speaking their local dialect, which is a language closely related to Thai spoken in Thailand. Muong people live here as well. Most people living here are bilingual, however English is not widely spoken.
Established in 1999, the majestic biodiversity of Pu Luong Nature Reserve stretches from Mai Chau in the northwest to Cuc Phuong National Park in the southeast. It covers an area of 17,662 hectares. The majority of this area is the tropical forest with a quarter of the land used for living and agriculture. In the Thai language, “Pu Luong” translates to “the highest peak of the village.”
